Pink Shirt Day marks 10year anniversary

first_imgWednesday marks Pink Shirt Day across the country. The anti-bullying movement first started ten years ago in Nova Scotia as two teens decided to stick up for a fellow student who was being picked on.Co-founder Travis Price says it’s hard to believe they’ve been doing this for as long as they have.“It’s motivational, it’s moving, it’s humbling. To know this is something I was part of starting so many years ago and here we are and we’re still doing it-it’s always hard to find words. It’s very hard not to be nostalgic all year and get emotional about how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown, how much I’ve grown.”Price will be spending the day in the Vancouver area speaking to students, telling them it’s okay to talk about bullying, to show people it’s not acceptable.“We need to make sure that youth know that they’re protected everyday and that they’re going to safe and healthy environment’s be it at school or online,” he said.“It’s also a good time for parents to open up conversation, talk about things maybe they went through, maybe they’re going through something in the workplace. Bullying isn’t something that just happens in schools so I think it’s a great day to have a conversation.”Price says the cause is close to his heart.“From being a 17-year-old kid not really knowing much about bullying other than the fact of, you know, it happened to me and I didn’t want it to happen to others to now being viewed as one of the professionals in the country that, you know, works with bullying prevention, works with youth, works with families, I’m honoured and I’m humbled.”This year’s Pink Shirt Day theme is cyber bullying.last_img read more
