TDK reinvents the boombox for the 21st century

first_imgSomeone in the 80s would think the iPod to be completely magic. “You mean I can store every song I’ll ever listen to on this little box the size of a cassette tape?” that person would ask before happily spiking their trust boombox to the pavement once and for all.Yes, the iPod and its ilk are a better way to enjoy music portability than a boombox, it’s true, but sometimes, I miss the communal aspects of the trust boombox. The iPod might be an incredible gadget, but you can’t walk onto a New York City subway with one and inflict gangster rap at an ear-spllitng decibel upon all of your other passengers, nor can you use your iPod to DJ an impromptu street breakdancing battle. I’m delighted to see that TDK has decided to revive the iconic boombox with this 3 Speaker affair, which leaves behind 80’s aesthetics while still being badass enough to carry around on your shoulder.Unlike the boomboxes of yore, the TDK model features USB, 3.5mm or auxiliary ports that allow you to connect your iPhone, iPod, PMP or flash drives. Sounds is delivered by a pair of 6-inch coaxial drivers and a high excursion subwoofer of the same size, while a combination of touch and dial controls help give the boombox its sleek looks. Best of all, depending on how you look at it: TDK’s boombox keeps it real by requiring old school D-batteries, although you can also plug it into an AC slot if need be. Price is to be announce. Release date should have been 89, but it’s more likely to be sometime in the next few months.Read more at TDKlast_img read more
