Google Pixel 4 to get support for hand gestures using Soli radar chip

first_imgGoogle Pixel 4 is in the news again. During the past couple of weeks, we have seen a steady influx of rumours and speculations about the Google’s upcoming smartphone some of which dare to indicate that Pixel 4 would come with a camera bump on the back of the phone – that is quite similar to the upcoming iPhone 11. Amid all these reports and more a new report indicates that the Pixel 4 smartphones will come with the company’s Soli chip.Google’s Project Soli or the Soli chip might not ring a bell to a lot of people after all it was the summer of 2016 – Google I/O 2016 – when the company gave a first demonstration of the technology after working on it for nearly a year. But Project Soli holds potential and the launch of Pixel 4 might be the time when we get to know what Google really has up its sleeves. For simplicity, Google’s Project Soli is a radar based project that uses hand gestures like rubbing your finger and your thumb to control smart devices. The project even recieved a waiver from FCC in December last year saying that the general public could benefit from the use of such technology. “Grant of the waiver will serve the public interest by providing for innovative device control features using touchless hand gesture technology,” FCC’s chief of engineering and technology, Julius Knapp had written in the order at the time. Now, a report by 9To5Google, Google might include the Soli radar chip in its Pixel 4 series. This means that users could perform functions like rejecting a call or pausing a song simply by waving their hands.advertisementWhat supports this theory is another report by XDA Developers which suggests that Android Q has code for gestures from Project Soli or Aware burried deep inside it. The publication found the code for two media playback gestures – Skip and Silence – in Android Q, indicating that Pixel 4 might as well house this cool technology. However, we will have to wait and watch to know anything for sure.Separately, new image renders by serial tipster Evan Blass indicate that the Google Pixel 4 XL would come with a squarish camera bump at the back that would house a triple rear camera setup and a rainbow coloured Google logo. Google is likely to ditch the rear mounted fingerprint sensor to opt for an in-display fingerprint sensor. In addition to this, it would come with two buttons that will be placed on the right side of the phone, while one will control the volume, the other will turn the power on/on. Notably, all these details are similar to what OnLeaks said in a collaboration with PriceBaba yesterday. One difference in the two reports seems to be that of the notch. While the renders by Blass indicate that Pixel 4 will come with a notch-less design, the one by OnLeaks indicate that Google will bring the notch back. He also believes that unlike the rumoured front firing speakers, Pixel 4 would come with a speaker grille that would be placed on either side of the USB-C port.Apart from this, a video of Pixel 4 case shared by Unbox Therapy hint towards large bezels in the front that are likely to house five different imaging units.Beyond this, Pixel 4 is likely to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and sport up to 6GB RAM. It is expected to run on Android Q and come with Google Assistant 2.0.ALSO READ: | New Google Pixel 4 renders appear online, may have five front imaging unitsALSO READ: | Google working on Project Soli that will let users control phones, speakers with a wave of handALSO READ: | Google Pixel 4 leak shows an iPhone 11 like camera designlast_img read more
