“I gather [Pelosi] and the Democratic leader in the Senate still are looking at something dramatically larger,” the Kentucky Republican told reporters. “That’s not a place I think we’re willing to go. But I do think there needs to be another package. Hopefully we can get past the impasse we’ve had now for four or five months and get serious about doing something that’s appropriate.” – Advertisement – “We’re at the same place, even more so with the pandemic,” she said. “Because look at those numbers!”Her comments reflect a fundamental disagreement with Republicans over what the U.S. needs to recover from the pandemic. The gulf has lingered throughout start-and-stop talks between Pelosi and the White House. On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged the need for another aid package but said it should resemble the GOP’s $500 billion proposal that Senate Democrats blocked before the election.- Advertisement – The top Democrats in Congress said Thursday that a record surge in U.S. coronavirus infections raises the urgency for a new relief bill. The part of the process that has confounded Washington for months — crafting a bill backed by both Democrats and Republicans — has become no less of a challenge since Election Day.Speaking to reporters in Washington, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she still supports legislation to inject at least $2.2 trillion into the American health-care system and economy. The California Democrat, who will see her party’s majority shrink by at least six seats after the 2020 election, cited Wednesday’s record 143,231 new Covid-19 infections as reason to stick to a spending demand the GOP has seen as unreasonable.- Advertisement – Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated again Thursday that Democrats would block a bill similar to the one Republicans previously crafted. The New York Democrat called it a “nonstarter” as he backed Pelosi’s stance of at least $2.2 trillion in new spending.Schumer also contended many GOP senators’ refusal to acknowledge Democrat Joe Biden as president-elect — while President Donald Trump levels baseless charges of electoral fraud — has hampered efforts to govern during the crisis.“Joe Biden has won. Now move on and work with us to solve the Covid crisis,” he said. “Let us bring the country together and get things done.”Lawmakers would have to overcome a number of challenges to pass pandemic relief legislation before Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. Among the barriers, Trump has showed little interest in anything other than fighting the election results since Nov. 3.Biden has listed coronavirus aid as one of his top priorities when he enters office. Control of Congress during his presidency is an open question. The GOP will keep a narrow Senate majority unless Democrats can win two likely runoffs in Georgia in January. Even if Democrats win both races, they would achieve a 50-50 split, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris holding a tiebreaking vote.Democrats could also end up with 224 seats or even less in the House, according to NBC News estimates, giving Pelosi a smaller margin of error for party defections on legislation.Headline economic numbers in the U.S. have improved: initial jobless claims lingered near their lowest levels of the pandemic last week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Even so, more than 21 million Americans remain on some form of unemployment assistance, and economic pain could sharpen as more states consider restrictions to slow the spiking infection rate.Subscribe to CNBC on YouTube. Facebook44Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by South Sound Women’s EventsSouth Sound Women’s Day is a shining example of women empowering women. Photo by Dinea de PhotoHere in our own community, women who attend South Sound Women’s Day on Saturday, October 10, 2015 on the campus of South Puget Sound Community College will experience a stimulating, unstoppable energy. Oprah Winfrey became known for it, from the moment she first dabbed at her eyes, shared a tragic personal story and embraced a tearful guest, when the books she recommended were read in every book club everywhere, as her probing, intimate questions revealed countless, unexpected commonalities among women. What was that powerful thing that made The Oprah Winfrey Show stand apart from the sensationalism of other daytime talk shows and catapulted Oprah herself to become the legend-in-her-own-time, iconic woman that she is today? That thing was the electric, inexorable energy that happens when women come together, when they suddenly feel safe enough to let their guard down, supported enough to share their feelings and fears, and committed enough to want to help each other get where they’re going. At South Sound Women’s Day, that same energy will be present for all attendees to relish in.Once the Oprah show started speaking essentially to women, in real terms, about real women’s issues – health, wealth, spiritual fulfillment, influence, potential, life goals – The Oprah Winfrey Show became the highest rated talk show in American television history.Speakers, workshops and booths to browse are all part of the South Sound Women’s Day. Photo by Dinea de PhotoOprah and her producers saw, and then built on, an incredibly powerful energy source. What they understood was the strength of women in numbers, the potential impact of women cheering each other on, the amazing combustion that happens to women, among women, when it’s just women. They share a mutually nurturing and supportive mindset, a safety net woven from their vast range of life lessons, a forum to share what they know, learn what they need to, applaud each other’s strengths, and discover new paths to success and fulfillment. With a dynamic group of women at South Sound Women’s Day teaching, sharing, learning, encouraging, celebrating, and empowering one another, attendees will enjoy an exciting, powerful and busy day packed with activity, inspiration, creativity and laughter. And, when you head home at the close of the event, you’re sure to take with you a renewed sense of who you are, what you aspire to do, and how you can achieve your goals. The day-long program gets underway at 8:00 am, when the SPSCC Student Union Center opens its doors for registration and networking. Introductions and acknowledgments follow, with opening remarks from the YWCA of Olympia, priming participants and setting the tone for a full day of inspiration, sisterhood and fun.Breakout sessions take place throughout the day, with a dozen workshops to choose from. Whether you want to increase your business and self-confidence, make your money go further, negotiate the salary you deserve, learn time-saving cooking tips or become more savvy at social media marketing for your business, there’s a workshop for you.Marilyn McKenna is the keynote speaker for the event.Following a healthful and filling lunch from Elyse’s Catering, keynote presenter Marilyn McKenna, an online nutrition coach and health, happiness and fitness blogger, will speak on being Happy and Healthy, From the Inside Out! Her story is one of realizing her own potential, but it’s also very much about how to find your own. She will help all of the South Sound Women’s Day attendees unleash our own hidden potential so that we can become a fierce agent for change within our own life and redirect the trajectory of our family’s health and wellness. With her trademark determination, honesty, and “take no prisoners” online persona, Marilyn was recognized in 2013 as the Best Local Twitter Personality by KING 5’s Best of Western Washington.Throughout the day, stroll the exhibitor area and enjoy a variety of local business showcasing their goods and services. Be sure to stop by the wellness area for a chair massage. A hosted Happy Hour including networking will cap off the fulfilling day.South Sound Women’s Events Inc. invites local women of all ages, stages, and walks of life to attend South Sound Women’s Day!Learn more or register now at www.southsoundwomensevents.org .Tickets are $75 when purchased by October 3 or $80 thereafter and include all workshops, speakers, meals, snacks, and more. The beneficiary of South Sound Women’s Day, YWCA of Olympia will gladly be accepting donations of hygiene products (feminine hygiene pads, toilet paper, dish soap, diapers) – for the YWCA’s Other Bank. The Other Bank supports health and human dignity through hygiene, while offering a gender-responsive job training opportunity for participants in the agency’s Women’s Economic Empowerment Program. Each purchase of a Table Host package for South Sound Women’s Day will give the gift to several YWCA Women’s Economic Empowerment graduates to attend this inspirational event.
